Blog Entry 1

Out of all the first-year seminar courses offered at McDaniel, From Grimm to Disney stood out the most to me. I am an avid reader who also loves movies, so always like to see how books I’ve read have been adapted into major motion pictures. Growing up I loved to read books like Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, and The Lord of the Rings. While some books like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings had already been adapted to movies by the time I read them, I also got to experience what it was like to read a book series before it’s movie came out allowing me to really see how much is changed in the adaptation of books into movies. I know that the Grimm fairy tales are no different regarding their Disney adaptations. I would like the opportunity to really learn more about the Grimm fairy tales and watch their movies with fresh eyes. In this seminar I am hoping to gain a new understanding and appreciation for the fairy tales some of my favorite Disney movies are based on like Sleeping Beauty and Princess and the Frog, like how I wanted to read Harry Potter after seeing the movie. Although movie adaptations are great in order to fully appreciate the movie you must know where it originated from, especially if it’s a bad adaptation which includes movies such as Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. My favorite fairy tale would have to be Hansel and Gretel. I think that I was able to resonate with it since like Hansel and Gretel I was also a kid who would want to visit a house made of candy. Even though they were deceived by the witch they were smart enough to leave a breadcrumb trail. It’s easier to engage kids in stories when they can relate them.
